Savarese Ch 4: Lumbar Spine Flashcards
Why is the lumbar spine more susceptible to disc herniations than other regions?
The POSTERIOR LONGITUDINAL LIGAMENT narrows progressively throughout this region.
In the thoracic and lumbar region, a nerve root will exit the intervertebral foramen ______ its corresponding vertebrae.
BELOW
When the lumbar nerve root exits, it is ____ to the intervertebral disk.
JUST ABOVE.
This is due to it having a longer way to travel to exit after L1/L2 - where the spinal cord ends.
What is the primary hip flexor?
The iliopsoas
What is at the level of the iliac crest?
L4/L5 intervertebral disc
What is the most common anomaly in the lumbar spine?
Facet (zygopophyseal) Trophism
What is Spina Bifida?
Defect in the closure of the lamina of the vertebral segment
What is Spina Bifida Occulta?
No herniation through the defect.
Tuft of hair over the defect
What is Spina Bifidia meningocele?
A herniation of the meninges through the defect
What is Spina bifida meningomyelocele?
A herniation of the meninges AND THE NERVE ROOTS through the defect.
Associated with neurological deficits.
What is/are the major motion(s) of the lumbar spine?
Flexion and extension
How does sidebending of L5 effect the sacrum?
L5 will cause a sacral oblique axis to be engaged on the same side.
How will rotation of L5 effect the sacrum?
Will cause the sacrum to rotate toward the OPPOSITE SIDE.
What forms the Ferguson’s angle?
the intersection of a horizontal line and the line of inclination of the sacrum
What is the normal Ferguson’s angle measurement?
25-35 degrees
