Sampling Of Wild Organisms Flashcards
How should sampling be carried out?
In a manner that minimises impact on wild species and habitats
What must consideration be given to when sampling?
To rare and vulnerable species and habitats that are protected by legislation
What must the chosen techniques point count, transect or remote detection be appropriate to?
The species being sampled
What is point count?
A point count involves the observer recording all individuals seen from a fixed point count location. This can be compared to other point count locations or with data from the same location gathered at other times
What are quadrats of suitable size and shape or transects used for?
Plants and other sessile or slow moving organisms
What is a quadrat?
A frame of a known area sometimes split into smaller sections used to sample plants and slow moving organisms in a large area
What is a transect?
A transect is a line along which different samples can be taken. These are often set up along an area where the terrain or abiotic factors are changeable e.g. from a woodland into a field or up a sandy shore from the water line to the high tide line. The measurements are usually taken at regular intervals.
What capture traps are used for mobile species?
Traps and nets
How can elusive species be sampled?
Either directly by using camera traps or an indirect method such as scat sampling
What is scat sampling?
Finding and identifying animal waste to identify the species living in an area. It act also be used to identify the animals diet
