Q

What is ranked data?

A

Data transformation in which numerical values are replaced by their rank when data is sorted from lowest to highest

Q

How can someone get an idea of how varied data is?

A

By analysing the data and therefore seeing how consistent the results are

10
Q

What is the range?

A

The largest value minus the smallest value. The range is generally not used when analysing data as it can be distorted by extreme values (outliers)

Q

What are box plots?

A

Box plots can be used to show variation about the median:
-within the same data set
-between different data sets
A box plot displays the five number summary of a set of data which is the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile and maximum

Q

What are error bars?

A

Error bars are graphical representations of the variability of data and used on graphs to indicate the error or uncertainty in a reported measurement. There are various different ways to plot these. Large error bars tend to indicate high variability

16
Q

What is correlation?

A

-A relationship between 2 variables where they both follow the same pattern
-Correlation is an association and does not imply causation

17
Q

What is causation?

A

Causation exists if independent variable is known to change the values of the dependent variable

18
Q

What is positive correlation?

A

exists when an increase in one variable is accompanied by an increase in the other variable

19
Q

What is negative correlation?

A

Exists when an increase in one variable is accompanied by a decrease in the other variable

20
Q

What is the strength of correlation proportional to?

A

The spread of values from line of best fit
