Sampling Flashcards
1
Q
What is target population
A
Refers to the group of people who the researcher is interested in studying
2
Q
What is generalising
A
- concluding findings from sample that will also be true of the wider population
- IS ONLY VALID WHEN SAMPLE JS REPRESENTATIVE
3
Q
Opportunity sampling
A
- selecting a group of participants who are easily available
- can be BIASED
- most common
4
Q
Random sampling
A
- every member of the target population has the same chance of being selected
- time consuming!!!
- eg. random number generator
5
Q
Systematic sampling
A
Uses a procedure that avoids groups of being being selected together, eg picking the fifth house on a street
- representative, can be biased, depends of target population
- STARTING POINT HAS TO BE RANDOM
6
Q
Stratified sampling
A
Selecting people in order to maintain the overall population that the researcher think is important
- eg, 30% of people are elderly so 30% of sample must be
- representative but could be biased
