Bartlett's Theory Flashcards
What mistakes did Bartlett notice ?
1) participants added new material so it made sense to them.
2) they forgot sections they didn’t understand.
3) they changed things to make it seem more similar to what they’re used to.
4) unusual details caught people’s attention.
What was Bartlett’s conclusion ?
-ideas from story were forgotten or distorted because participants didn’t have the cultural schemas in their LTM
What did Bartlett see encoding and retrieval as ?
- he saw it as an active process of building up a memory, motivated by the desire to understand.
- DEVELOPED THEORY OF RECONSTRUCTIVE MEMORY !!
What factors affect memory (besides from culture) ?
1) State
2) timing
3) interference
4) context
How does state impact memory ?
-easier for people to remember something when they are in the same physical state as when it was first learned.
Can be applied to both mood and taking caffeine
How does timing affect memory ?
-info is forgotten over a period of time.
Not always a bad thing, time delay makes revision effective.
How does interference affect memory ?
-info is forgotten as it can be confused with other info.
Events that are unusual are better remembered.
How does context affect memory ?
-easier to remember things in the same context we learned them.
Visiting someone we learnt it can act as a cue.
What is a false memory ?
-we think we remember something but it hasn’t happened.
