Q

What does this direct theory assume ?

A

1) Expectations and knowledge do not play a major role in how perceptions works
2) Environment provides AFFORDANCES to perceiver, so that into that is provides, helps it to be understood, eg depth cues

Q

What is bottom up processing ?

A
  • opposite to top-down Processing

- term given to perceptual processes that start with sensory receptors and then work to higher levels of processing

Q

Evidence for his theory ?

A

VISUAL CLIFF EXPERIMENT, newborn animals and human babies are able to perceive depth which SUPPORTS the bottom up theory

Q

What did Gibson think of animals ?

A

ALL ANIMALS PERCEIVE THE WORLD IN SIMILAR WAYS, goes against that perception is based strongly on memories and thought processes because animals have simpler thought processes than humans

Q

What is motion parallax ?

A

The way the visual world changes when an animal or person moves, so closer objects appear to move more than distant, allowed illusions and ambiguities to be solved
