Design Of Experiments 1 Flashcards
Laboratory experiment
-allowed background noises/ distractions to be reduced/ eliminated
-participants tested one at a time
POSITIVE- highly controlled, rate errors
NEGATIVE- setting is artificial so answers could be fake
Field experiment
-conducted in a participants natural environment, leads to more realistic behaviour
POSITIVE- realistic
NEGATIVE- EVs such as background can affect results
Natural experiment
-DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND FIELD IS THAT IT IS NOT SET UP BY RESEARCHER, OCCURS SPONTANEOUSLY IN THE REAL WORLD
POSITIVE- ethical view, experimenter Not responsible for anything that happens, so ideal for studying harmful situations
NEGATIVE- impossible to control EVs, no random allocation to conditions
Experimental design
-way participants are allocated to conditions of the study
Repeated measures
-all participants must complete all conditions of experiment
Independent groups
-participants are randomly divided into groups, and each group takes part in a single condition
Matched pairs design
-two separate groups of participants could be created by matching participants up on important characteristics such as age or ability level
Control condition
-condition used simple for comparison, used as BASELINE
