sampling Flashcards
Sample
a group of people who take part in a research investigation, to represent the target population
random sample
every person in the target population stands an equal chance of being selected
opportunity sample
involves the researcher using anyone who available at the time and willing to take part
stratified sample
randomly selecting participants from each sub-group in the target population so that each sub-group is represented proportionally
systematic sample
where every nth member of the target population is chosen
volunteer sample
involves participants selecting themselves
strengths of random sample
-representative
-can be generalised
weaknesses of random sample
-costly and time consuming
-not the most convenient
strengths of opportunity sample
-quick and easy
-cheap
-most convenient
strengths of stratified sampling
-very representative
-can be generalised
weaknesses of stratified sampling
-costly
-time consuming
strengths of systematic sampling
-eliminates researcher bias
-should be representative
limits of systematic sampling
-isn’t always representative
-can’t always be generalised as a result
strengths of volunteer sample
-quick
-easy
weaknesses of volunteer sampling
-isn’t likely to be representative due to volunteer bias
-can’t be generalised
