pro: allows for unbiased review
con: may delay publication to publish their own similar research first
double blind review (def, pro & con)
where both researcher and reviewers are both anonymous
pro: unbiased
con: researcher may be identified through style
open review (def, pro & con)
where the researcher and reviewer are known to each other
pro: reduces risk of personal comments or plagiarism
con: criticism is watered down out of politeness or fear
purposes of peer review
-validate the quality and relevance of research
-evaluate proposals to finding bodies
-contributes to the research rating of university departments
-spots fraudulent research
