Reliability & Validity Flashcards
reliability
consistency of results
ways of assessing reliability
-the test retest method
-inter observer/ inter rater reliability
the test retest method
measures external reliability by giving the same test to the same ppts on two occasions to see if the same results are obtained. if results are the same, reliability is established
inter-observer reliability
assesses whether different observers (min of 2) are viewing and rating behaviour on the same way. results with a strong positive correlation of more than 0.8 have high inter observer reliability
validity
the degree to which something measures what it claims to, and also how generalisable the findings are beyond research settings
face validity
a simple way of assessing validity and involves the extent to which items on a test look like they’re measuring what they’re claiming to measure
concurrent validity
assesses validity by correlating scores on a test with another test of the same behaviour, which has been tested for validity. a strong positive correlation indicates validity
temporal validity
assesses to what degree research findings remain true over time. a form of external validity
ecological validity
the extent to which results can be generalised to other settings and situations. a form of external validity
