Salivaray Glands Flashcards
How much saliva prod a day
600-1000ml
What are the thre major pairs of salivary glands
Parotid
Submand
Subling
Then minor
What is the rough location of parotid gland
Pyramidal shape with Apex below angle of mandible, posterior edge is near eam
Where does the parotid duct arise and terminate
Emerges form anterior border, passes over Masseter and pierces Buccinator p, emptying into oral cav on papilla opposite 2nd upper molar
What is embedded int he parotid gland
Externa, carotid artery
Retromandibilar vein
Facial nerve
What su the parasymp inv of parotid gland
Preganglionic - Glossopharyngeal –> lesser petrosal –> otic gang
Postganglionic - otic gang –> auriculotemporal –> parotid
Where is the submandibular gland roughly
Superficial part visible below inferior border of mandible, the gland wraps itself around posterior border of mylohyoid
Smaller deep portion
Where does the sub duct emerge etc
Form deep part of gland and passes forward to terminate on sublingual papillae at the base of lingual frenum
What is the parasymp inv of submandibular gland
Preganglionic - facial nerve –> chorda tympani –> lingual nerve –> submandibular ganglion
Postganglionic - submand gang –> submand gland
Where is the rough location of the sublingual glands
Almond shaped sits in sublingual fossa bounded above by oral mucosa, below my mylohyoid and medially. Genioglossus muscle
What happens to the sublingual ducts
Vary
Anterior part drains via single duct that joins submand duct
Posterior part drains via several small ducts that end on sublingual folds
What. The stroma
Covered with tough ct capsule what septa
Subdivided into lobules
What is the parenchyma
Clumping tubuloacin glands
Sec elements consist of serous acini, mucous acini and mixed acini although the type present does on gland
Sec prod by merocrine sec
What is merocrine sec
Occurs by exocytosis
Mem surrounding sec vesicles fuses with cell mem and discharge contents to extracellular space
What is serous secretion
Watery thin
Contains proteins, amylase and ions
Via active sec
What is mucus secretion
Mucin which consists of protein core that is highly deco with sugar residues and results in viscous sticky sec
What are the cells of serous acini
Wedge shaped in basal part of cell
Extensii RER
Granular appearance
What are mucous acini like
Tubular
Tubuloacinar glandular structure
Sec granules in cyto
When tissue processing
What is serous demilune
Mixed acini
Submand gland
Crescent shaped collection of sec cells
What are myoepthelial cells
Specialised cells for contraction
Help contract and sec from sec cells
What does an acinus empty into
Intercalated duct consisting of cuboidal cells
What does the intercalated duct empty into
Striated duct which the cells are columnar
What happens in the duct which modifies the saliva
Cells pump sodium ions out saliva and pottasium and bicarbonate into saliva
What does the striated duct empty into
Excretory duct aka collecting ducts
Whic are lined with pseudo stratified columnar epi
What are some minor salivary glands
Lingual Minor sublingual Labial Palatine Buccal.
What are von ebner gland
One group of minor salivary glands
Serous
Associated with vallate papillae flush out cleft
What innervation is though to increase saliva prod
Parasymp increase
Symp decreases
What are taste buds
Chemo receptive units span epi
Molecules enter pore and interact with receptors on micorvilli
Read neurotransmitter to afferent nerve fibres
What are some basic functions of the saliva
Protection mouth drying out and flushing bacteria Buffering Tooth integrity Anti microbial activity Digestion Taste
