Salads Flashcards
What is a semi-permeable membrane?
It only lets some things pass.
Give an example of a semi-permeable membrane.
The dialysis tubing is semipermeable because it let iodine in but it didn’t let starch out.
How do molecules normally move in a concentration gradient?
They move from high concentration to low concentration
What is osmosis?
Diffusion of water from high to low concentration
Why do we need facilitated diffusion? (What does it do that regular diffusion can’t?)
We need facilitated diffusion so it can help pass the bigger molecules like glucose pass through. It uses transport proteins.
What would happen to the molecules of starch inside the bag if we added a digestive (breaking down) enzyme? Would it change the results?
It would break down the starch molecule making it small enough to pass through the dialysis tubing.
Hypotonic
Swell; Because water moves into cell to dilute internal concentration
Hypertonic
shrivel; Because water leaves cell trying to dilute external concentration
Isotonic
Remain at equilibrium; Because there is an even water movement
