Burns, falls, cuts and poisoning

To avoid falls
Wipe up spills immediately Don’t over polish floors Avoid trialing flexes Stairs should be well lit with a two way switch Don’t leave clutter around
Safety with medicines
Store in original container
Store in a locked cupboard
Throw away out of date medicine
Never use someone else’s prescribed medicine
Fire safety
Use fire guards
Don’t hang clothes near an open fire
Don’t move portable heaters when Lit
Siwitcj off and unplug electrical appliances at night
Small fire
Use a fire blacker/ extinguisher to put it out
Never use water on an electrical fire
Call fire bridge if unable to extinguishe
Larger fire
Raise alarm
Evacuate everyone
Call fire brigade
Never re Enter

Aims of first aid
Preserve aid
Prevent condition from worsening
Reassure victim and provide comfort
In the case of a serious accident
Stay calm Call emergency services Check for consciousness If unconscious, check for breathing If there’s a pulse, check for bleeding and apply pressure Don’t move victim unless in danger Don’t give them anything to eat or drink Make paintent comfortable and warm
Burn
Caused by dry heat eg iron
Scald
Caused by moist head eg hot liquid
Small burns / scalds
Submerge area in cool water until pain eases
Spray with burn spray if wished
Cover with sterile dressing
Major burns/ scales
If clothing is on fire, pour water on victim
Don’t remove clothes that are stuck to the wound
Cover any exposed areas With a clean dry cloth
Treat for shock by raising victims legs
Get medical help
Cuts
If the cut is deep, apply pressure with a clean pad and get medical help
Less serious cuts
Wash wound with warm water and antiseptic. Ensure there nothing embedded in the wound. Dry carefully and cover with clean dressing
Nosebleed
Lean forward and squeeze nostrils
Bee sting
Bread Soda
Wasp sting
Vinegar
Choking
Caused by a blockage in the airways
Choking for children’s
Place child face down over knees and slap 4 times between shoulder blades
Adults
Use heimoich manoeuvre ; stand behind Victim, clasp hands under rib cage and pull sharply in and up
Falls : if victim is unable to move
Don’t move unless in danger . Cover and send for medical help
Strain/ sprain
Apply cold compress to area for 30 mins to reduce swelling. Dry and wrap in a bandage rest and elevate
Poisoning
If substance has been swallowed, bring to hospital immediately
Bring container
If unconscious, place in recovery portion
Make victim vomit if you’re sure the substances isn’t corrosive
If it is corrosive, give milk to neutralsise
Fainting
Sit down and lean forward so head is between knees.
