S8 Cartilage Flashcards
What are the three types of cartilage?
- Hyaline cartilage
- Elastic cartilage
- Fibrocartilage
Where do you find hyaline cartilage?
- Hyaline - ribcage, bronchi, trachea, larynx
2. Hyaline articular - between joints/ends of long bones
Where do you find elastic cartilage?
Pinna of ear, epiglottis and Eustachian tube
Where do you find fibrocartilage?
Intervertebral discs and temporomandibular joint
What are the extracellular components of cartilage?
- In the ECM - hyaluronic acid (GAG) and proteoglycans
2. Collagen and elastic fibres
What is the main and only (in hyaline and elastic) cell in cartilage?
Chondrocytes (only in mature cartilage)
Chondroblasts before
What other cell is present in fibrocartilage?
Fibroblasts
Which type of collagen do each 3 cartilage types contain?
- Hyaline - collagen 2
- Elastic - collagen 2
- Fibro - collagen 1
What is the function/advantage of fibrocartilage?
Acts as a shock absorber and resits forces - present in areas under directional stress
What is the function/advantage of elastic cartilage?
Tough but flexible - allows movement
