S3 - Biology Test (2) Flashcards
Plants make their own food through Photosynthesis.
What is one food they make and how is it stored?
They make Glucose and store it as starch
Give two examples of uses for plants
Food / fragrances / clothes / building material
What is the definition of photosynthesis?
A series of enzyme controlled reactions which allow green plants (those containing chlorophyll) to make carbohydrates using light energy
What is the photosynthesis word equation?
Sunlight
Carbon dioxide + Water ~> Oxygen + Glucose
Chlorophyll
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
CO2 + H2O ~> O2 + C6H12O6
Name the three ways glucose can be used?
- Respiration
- To make cellulose
- To make starch
What is cellulose?
A structural carbohydrate found in cell walls
What is starch?
A storage carbohydrate
How do we test for starch?
- Boil leaf to remove waxy layer
- Put the leaf in ethanol to remove
chlorophyll - Wash the leaf
- Test with iodine solution

Fill in the missing labels
What is glucose used for?
Releasing energy via respiration / To make cellulose / To make strach
The bubbles in a photosynthesising elodea can be counted to measure the rate of photosynthesis.
What gas does the elodea give off?
Oxygen
What factors affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Temperature
- Light Intensity
- Carbon dioxide concentration
