this medication can commonly cause you to dry cough and dizziness. if these symptoms get too severe you should talk with your dr about switching to a different medication.
Key counseling:

avoid salt substitutes containing potassium and dont take a potassium supplement because this drug will increase the amount of potassium in your body
I would recommend monitoring your blood pressure regularly. we do sell blood pressure machines that can record and log your blood pressure with each use, so if you do not currently have one those are very convenient
Losartan
Cozaar Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonist Hypertension, diabetic nephropathy QD this medication may cause dizziness. if it becomes too severe you should talk to your dr about switching your medication. this medication has been known to cause a dry cough, but is not common.

this medication might make you have to pee more frequently. it can also cause dizziness so be cautious while first starting on this med. this medication may cause you to be more sensitive to light, so use sunscreen

i want you to be aware that alcohol may cause you to feel light-headed or dizzy when you stand up

this medication may cause swelling in your arms or legs which should go away over time. if you experience swelling that won’t go away you should talk to your dr. it can also cause dizziness and fatigue so try and avoid driving when first starting this medication until you feel comfortable with how this medication effects you. it can cause flushing to occur but should not be concering and it should go away on its own

Immediate release: BID controlled release: QD w/ food
this medication may cause you to feel light-headed or dizzy when you stand up. you may experience a faster heart rate, fatigue, and decrease in sexual arousal.
Key counseling:
it is important to not abruptly stop taking this medication. if you really want to stop please talk to your dr first.
do you have asthma? yes-> take caution since this medication can effect how well your asthma medication works. let your dr know if it affects your ability to control your asthma
Simvastatin

HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor
treats high cholesterol
qd, pm
may cause minor muscle pain or weakness. if this happens and it starts to bother you you should let your Dr know
if you can you should begin incorporating a diet lower in cholesterol such as cutting back on red meat and try exercising. even once a week can make a significant difference in your health.
make sure to avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication, or at least limit yourself to 8 ounces a day
(if relevant): do not take if you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant
Albuterol HFA

this medication may cause shakiness, if this occurs and its really bothersome you should talk to your doctor. it can also cause feelings of nervousness and a fast, pounding heart beat. if you experience these symptoms they should go away with time. if you develop flu like symptoms you should contact your dr
Key counseling:
show patient how to use inhaler:
-start by shaking inhaler
-remove mouth cap
-for first use prime inhaler by pressing down the top of it twice
- stand or sit up straight
- take a deep breath and exhale
- bring it up to your mouth and create a tight seal with your lips
-press down on the top and inhale slowly for 3-5 seconds
-hold breath if you can for 10 sec then breathe out slowly
(asthma) if you find yourself needing to use your inhaler over two times a week you should contact your dr to see if you should get additional treatment for your asthma

if you develop flu like symptoms you should contact your dr. another side effect is a sore throat which should go away on its own. it can also cause dry mouth.
Key counseling:
show patient how to use inhaler
-when you open it and hear the click its ready to be inhaled
-exhale away from the inhaler and then put it to your lips and take a quick, deep breath
-try to hold your breath for 10 seconds, or as long as you can and breath out slowly
-close the inhaler
-dont put your fingers over the filter
if your breathing worsens over time while using this medication you should contact your dr to discuss a possible change in treatment.
Fluticasone/Salmeterol Diskus

if you develop flu like symptoms you should contact your dr it can also cause a sore throat.
key counseling:
it is important that you rinse your mouth with water after using this inhaler. if you dont rinse your mouth you could develop a fungal infection in your mouth.
show patient how to use inhaler:
-when you get home write the date you started the medication on the inhaler and put the use by date one month after initial use.
-try to keep the inhaler parallel to the ground and open it until its fully open
-slide the lever until you hear a click
-exhale away from the inhaler and then put it to your lips and take a quick, deep breath
-try to hold your breath for 10 seconds, or as long as you can and breath out slowly
-close the diskus

key counseling:
inhaler technique:
-start by pushing the button at the bottom to take plastic casing off. write the discard after date on the cartridge which is three months from first use
- insert cartridge into inhaler and push it in using a hard surface until it clicks
- put safety covering back on, you should hear a click
-for first using this medication it needs to be primed.
-start by rotating the bottom of the inhaler counter-clockwise until you hear it click.
-then, take off the safety cap and push the button away from you
-usually it takes about three times to prime, but just make sure you see a consistent amount of spray coming out before using
-to use it, follow the previous steps, but this time take a deap breath and exhale, then put it up to your mouth and create a tight seal with your lips. press the button on the side and inhale a slow, deep breath for 3-5 sec, try and hold for 10 sec, then slowly exhale.

this medication may cause diarrhea flatulence, nausea and vomiting. if these side effects occur frequently you can contact your dr.
Key counseling:
-you should avoid consuming a high amount of alcohol when taking this medication
- it may cause stomach upset. if it becomes unbearable you should contact your dr about a different treatment
- the best way to control type 2 diabetes is by trying to improve your diet. even small changes can make a large impact. if you can, try and exercise. even exercising once a week is a great way to start.
Glipizide
Glucotrol Sulfonylurea type 2 diabetes IR: qd-bid ER: 30 min before breakfast this medication may cause weight gain key counseling: -avoid drinking alcohol while on this medication
- this medication may lower your blood sugar, so be aware of unusual fatigue, confusion or shakiness signs of low blood sugar, if you do experience these symptoms it is okay and you can treat it. try and be prepared by keeping sugary snacks with you to get your blood sugar back up. you can actually buy glucose tablets and keep them with you
- management plan
Insulin Glargine
lantus, basaglar, toujeo long acting insulin type 1 or 2 diabetes QD this medication may cause weight gain. its very rare to be allergic to this medication, but if you develop a rash or experience dry skin those could be signs of an allergic reaction and you should contact your dr. key counseling: -show them how to inject
- rotate injection site
- this medication may cause your blood sugar to become low or spike up. you should stay aware of how your blood sugar changes after injection and know what to do depending on if your blood sugar is high or low.
-opened pens can stay at room temp but leave unused pens refrigerated.
EXPIRATION:
Basaglar and lantus: 28 days after taking out of fridge
Toujeo: 42days after taking out of fridge
Dulaglutide
Trulicity glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist type 2 QW this medication may cause some stomach upset, nausea, commonly cause diarrhea, decreased appetite and weight loss. if you experience any of these symptoms and they feel intolerable you should contact your dr. while allergic reaction is rare, if you experience anything such as a rash at the injection site or dry skin you should contact your dr. Key counseling: - injection technique

- discuss managing type 2 diabetes
- keep in fridge, it can last 14 days if unrefrigerated
Canagliflozin
Invokana
SGLT-2 inhibitor

this medication is known to cause UTIs and make you pee more often. it may also lower your blood pressure
key counseling:
-are you aware of the symptoms of a UTI? if your urine changes color or becomes painful to urinate it is possible you developed a UTI and you should contact your Dr
- it is important that you drink a lot of water while taking this medication. i know it sounds counterintuitive, but since you might pee more often you also need to hydrate more often so your body does not get dehydrated.
