How do you inject insulin?
Pinch injection area and insert needle at 90 degrees
Release pinch and press down on plunger to inject insulin
Hold for 5-10 sec then remove and dispose in sharps container
Process to prime insulin pen
Remove cap Twist on new pen needle Twist dose dial to 2 units Depress button and hold Repeat until a bead of fluid comes out of needle tip
Steps to use blood glucose meter
Wash Hands/sterilize finger
Prick with lancet
Apply test strip to blood drop
Rotate fingers with each test
What is the rule of 15?
Why is it used?
Used if pt is symptomatic for hypoglycemia
- check BG, if below 70 mg/dl consume 15g of glucose
- Wait 15 min then check BG again
- If still bellow 70mg/dl take another 15g of glucose
- wait 15 min and check again
- if still below 70mg/dl consume another 15g of glucose and call a medical provider
What can you use if someone is unresponsive due to hypoglycemia?
Injectable glucagon Nasal glucagon (baqsimi)
