Rural (India) Flashcards
5 main changes in farming in developing countries
India
GM crops which gives a high yeild variety of crops such as rice or wheat.
Improved technology - mechanism
- Because HYVs require more water and monsoon rains are unpredictable -
- Wells are made to reach underground water supplies.
- inundation canals on the banks of the river fill when the river floods and delivers water to the fields.
- canals and channelled waterbto fileds from reservoirs
Improved technology- irrigation
Chemicals
Biofuel are fuels made from plants. Crops are grown to make biofuels - sugar cane in kerala, india.
Advantages of changes in farming in India
GM crops
Grow quicker which means a higher crop yield.
More crops harvested each year which means a reduced rate in hunger
More crops can be sold so more money for the farmers.
Disadvantages of changes in farming in India
GM crops
Less drought resistant
More suspectible to pests and disease
Large amounts of expensive fertilisers needed .
Local people claim HYVs don’t taste as good.
Advantages of chsnges in farming in India
Improved technology mechanisation
Use of mini tractors and small mechanised rice harvesters mean -
Quicker and more efficient
Less labour and costs
Allowing larger more profitable farms
Disadvantages of chsnges in farming in India
Improved technology mechanisation
Richer farmers have benefited the most because they can afford the better technology and with it produce crops faster and make more money.
Poorer farmers have list their land.
Causes unemployment and rural urban migration because workers move away to find jobs.
Advantages of changes in farming in India
Improved technology- irrigation (water supplies)
Because HYVs require more water and monsoon rains are unpredictable
- Wells are made to reach underground water supplies.
- inundation canals on the banks of the river fill when the river floods and delivers water to the fields.
- canals and channelled waterbto fileds from reservoirs
This gives a more reliable all year water supply and allows crops to be grown all year round.
Disadvantages of changes in farming in India
Improved technology- irrigation (water supplies)
Because HYVs require more water and monsoon rains are unpredictable
- Wells are made to reach underground water supplies.
- inundation canals on the banks of the river fill when the river floods and delivers water to the fields.
- canals and channelled waterbto fileds from reservoirs
They are expensive and the reservoirs drown farmland.
Advantages of changes in farming in india
Chemicals
Artificial fertilisers help to grow crops better, giving higher yields and more food.
Prevent oests and disease killing crops which means more food.
Disadvantages of changes in farming in india
Chemicals
Increased use of fertilisers can reduce soil quality.
Advantages of changes in farming in India
Biofuels
Reduces the amount of, and cost of, oil that India has to import.
Reduces the cost of fuel. This helps industries, So factories can employ more people who will then have a higher standard of living.
Burning biofuels puts fewer greenhouse gases into the air.
Disadvantages of changes in farming in India
Biofuels
If more land is used for sugarcane (biofules) then there is less food grown which means less people.have food to eat.
Sugarcane uses a lot of water which means other crops.might nit have enough to grow.
Trees have to be chopped down to make room meaning more greenhouse gases released and soil erosion.
Expensive to make
