Q

Team A gets the opening tap and scores at the wrong basket. Team B then goes to the other end and scores a 3 point goal. Team A then commits a back court violation at which time it is discovered that both teams were going towards the wrong basket. There is 18:45 on the game clock. What is the ruling?

A

Team B gets the ball for a throw in nearest the spot of the ball when the back court violation occurred and is instructed to go towards the correct goal. The score is Team B leading 3-2 and play resumes with 18:45 on the game clock. 5.1.20. Pg 58

Q

Team B leads 87-86 with .3 seconds on the clock. Team A has the ball for a throw-in underneath their own basket on table side. A1 passes to A2 who catches the ball, shoots and the horn sounds while the ball is in flight. The ball goes in. The Center official, who couldn’t see the catch because it was on the baseline in front of the Lead official, counts the basket. What is the proper procedure and proper ruling?

A

The three officials should meet at half court and instruct the players for both teams to go to their benches. Upon discussion, it should be determined that A2 catches the ball and therefore, does not score a legal goal. The basket does not count and Team B wins 87-86. 5.19. Pg 58

Q

At the end of regulation or any overtime period, a shot is attempted near the final horn and a foul is called. Describe the correct sequence of all possibilities in a game without a monitor.

A

Foul – Horn – Shot release: The foul is charged…award free throws. If it can be determined how much time to put back on the clock, it is based on when the foul occurred. There is a timing mistake and the goal shall count if it went in.
Foul – Horn – Shot release: so close to the final horn that no timing mistake occurs, then the foul will count, the shot will NOT count and the player will shoot free throws with no time on the clock and no players on the lane spaces.
In all other cases, if the horn occurs first, then nothing happens unless the foul is a Flagrant or Technical.
In all other cases, everything else would happen before the horn, put the actual time back on the clock and play from there. Case book A.R. 110. Pg 37

Q

With 5 seconds remaining in the first half, A1 inbounds the ball to A2 who dribbles for 5 seconds and then shoots and misses. A5 gets the rebound and on the put back is fouled by B3. The ball goes in and there are 4 seconds left on the clock. What is the correct ruling and procedure?

A

The officials should get together and re-enact the play. If they have definite knowledge that time expired before the foul and put back, then the half is over. If they do not have definite knowledge, they should put the time on the clock they think is correct (it could be 4) and play on from there. Case book AR 122. Pg 41&42

Q

The game clock has 15:30 with 15 seconds on the shot clock. A1 shoots the ball with 5 seconds on the shot clock and it misses the ring and flange. A2 gets the rebound and the shot clock is reset to 30. At 15:10 B2 commits a foul, at which time, the coach of Team B tells the officials that the shot clock was reset by mistake. What is the ruling?

A

The foul on B2 should not count. The game clock should be put to 15:15 and the ball awarded to Team B for a throw in nearest the spot where the ball was. This is a shot clock violation on Team A. Case book. AR 121 pg 41
