RTIs Flashcards
Immunity against pathogenesis
Innate: cilia and alveolar macrophages
Acquired: B/T cells, IgA secreted by plasma cells
What is a sore throat/nasal congestion caused by
Bradykinin
What causes nasal discharge to change colour
Number of neutrophils
What causes cough
Mediated by Vagal nerve - inflammation must extend to the larynx
Systemic symptoms caused by
Cytokines
Risk groups for the flu
Immunosuppressed
Pregnant
Age <2 or >65
BMI >40
Complications of the flu
Primary viral pneumonia
Secondary bacterial pneumonia
CNS disease
Death
How does the influenza virus enter the cell
Haemagglutinin surface protein binds silica acid on cell surface glycoproteins/glycolipids
How does the virus escape
Neuraminidase on the surface of the virus cleaves silica bonds
What type of genome does the influenza virus have
Segmented genome - 8 parts, so can reassort
Treatment and prevention of flu
Active immunisation
Hand hygiene
Tamiflu - neurominidase inhibitor
Symptoms of pneumonia
Alveoli full of inflammation
Fever, breathlessness, cough, sputum production, hypoxia, increased rr, pleuritic chest pain, sepsis
What kind of infection is pneumonia
Infection of the lung parenchyma
Which stains are used to look at tb bacteria
Ziehl-Neelsen
Auramine-rhodamine
