What should be use in conjunction with the search rope
Thermal imaging camera
Examples of when a search rope should be deployed
- Large areas such as gymnasiums, ballrooms, convention halls
- Complex area such as schools, banks, office areas, commercial/industrial buildings, etc
- Below grade areas, subways, tunnels, basements, cellars
*Search rope shall be deployed in the above locations even in light to moderate heat and smoke conditions since conditions can deteriorate rapidly
Search rope stats
- 5/16 nylon or 7.5 mm diameter Kermantle
- 200 feet long
- Snap hook on each end
- Yellow bag marked with company number
- Rope also marked with company number
Newly issued search ropes will be of
- Kermantle type
- Double action snap hook on working end
- Snap hook on other end that secures it to bag
- This will avoid repacking the rope from the wrong end
Due to shrinkage nylon ropes may be short by
25 feet or more
Distance knots are
- 25 feet apart
- Single knot at 25 feet
- 2 knots at 50 feet
- 3 knots at 75 feet
Spacing between the distance knots is
6 inches
A single direction knot is located
18 inches before the distance knots
The 25 foot distance knot will not have a
Direction knot
When a unit deploys the search rope they must
Notify the IC
Under most conditions the number of members assigned to the search rope team should be limited to
3 members
A unit other than the 1st alarm receiving orders to search an area requiring a search rope shall
Maintain unit integrity and will perform this function with all members. The officer and 2 firefighters will operate as the 1st search team. The remaining members shall remain at the tie off point for assistance and monitoring
At operations when a search rope is deployed the IC shall, dependent on fire conditions encountered, consider
- Special calling additional ladder companies to the scene
- Consider assigning a special called ladder to the tie off point to assist, relieve or augment the unit utilizing the search rope
When 2 or more search ropes have been deployed in the same area with a serious fire condition the IC should consider
Assigning a Chief Officer to supervise
The IC shall include the use of search ropes in their
Progress reports
