How does a stress ulcer develop?

As a consequence of shock, sepsis, or severe trauma.

In acute gastritis, what is the rate of bleeding? What is the rate of ulcer perforation?

10-15% have bleeding
5% have perforation

What is a feature that distinguishes between acute ulcers and ulcers as a result of chronic peptic ulcer disease?
A
Acute ulcers (e.g. stress ulcers) have normal mucosa adjacent to them. Chronic PUD has abnormal mucosa throughout the stomach.

Name some causes of chronic gastritis.

From most common to least common:
- H.pylori infection
- Autoimmune gastritis
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Psychological stress
- Caffeine

What proportion of the population are colonized with H.pylori?
A
10-80%. A much smaller percentage of these people actually develop gastritis.
