Robbins 9th ed - Chapter 11 - Blood Vessels - General (2) Flashcards
Which blood vessels do NOT have an adventitia?
Capillaries and post-capillary venules.
Which cell types make up the walls of a capillary?
Endothelial cells (usually a single endothelial cell can be circumferential), and sparse encircling Pericytes. Pericytes resemble smooth muscle cells.
What is the internal elastic lamina?
This is the layer of extracellular matrix, lying between the intima and the media in an arterial wall.
What is the external elastic lamina?
This is the layer of extracellular matrix, lying between the media and the adventitia in many arterial walls.
What are vasa vasorum? Where are they found?
Literally “vessels of the vessels”, these are the small vessels that supply the outer layers of large arterial walls, and they course through the adventitia of these large arterial walls.
What is the innominate artery?
This is another name for the brachiocephalic trunk.
