Rivers (Geography) Flashcards
What happens in the second stage of formation of a v-shaped valley
Weak valley sides eventually move down into the river-creates steep valley sides. Chemical action by rain water takes place on the valley
What happens in the third stage of formation of a v-shaped valley
It has steep valley sides. Material from valley sides will be transported when river has enough energy. It has narrow shallow river
Where do v-shape valleys form
They form in the upper coarse
What is weathering
Is when rainfall wears away the rock. This can happen through chemical and physical weathering
What is chemical weathering
Chemical weathering is when the acid in the rain water reacts with the rock, making it weaker and eventually breaking it down
What is physical weathering
Physical weathering is when rainwater freezes in a crack on the rack, putting it under pressure. Water melts and refreezes repeatedly which eve totally breaks down the rock
What happens in the first stage of formation of a v-shaped valley
Hydraulic action and abrasion take place on the sides of the valley. The river cuts down through the land-vertical erosion
Where do waterfalls from
They from in the upper coarse
What is erosion
Is the wearing away of the landscape by flowing water
What is transportation
Is the movement of water and material by the river
What is deposition
Is when the river drops the material it is carrying along
What is hydraulic action and where does it fall into
Hydraulic action - erosion
The force of the water itself
What is abrasion and where does it fall into
Abrasion - erosion
The force of the water plus eroded stones
What is attrition and where does it fall into
Attrition - erosion
The eroded stones breaking up
What does solution mean and where does it fall into
Solution - erosion
Chemical action of water dissolves some rocks
