Q

What are biotic and abiotic factors

A

Eco-systems are affected by a variety of factors. These can be classified as biotic and abiotic

Q

What are biotic factors

A

Biotic factors are of living organisms e.g. Production (number of predictors), grazing (food supply), competition (for food, shelter, mate) and for plants (fighting for sun)

Q

What are abiotic factors

A

Abiotic factors are related to non living things in the environment. They tend to be physical factors that effect the distribution of organisms in the habitat. Abiotic factors can be measured e.g. Temperature,pH,light intensity and wind speed.

Q

What are biomes

A

There are various regions on our planet. Each of these regions is called a biome. A biome is a geographical region of the planet that contains distinctive communities of flora (plants) and fauna (animals). Each biome has a distinctive climate. Ecologists consider biomes to be a group of connected ecosystems

Q

Why do animals and plants need energy

A

Animals and plants need a lot of energy to carry out all the chemical reactions that keep them alive. Living things obtain energy from their food but do so in some very different ways

Q

What is a consumer

A

Animals are unable to make their own food; instead they get the energy they need to live by eating other organisms

What is a pyramid of energy

A

A diagram to show the energy content at each level of a food chain

What is intraspecific competition

A

Competition between members of the same species
