All In This Together (Biology) Flashcards
What is an habitat
The place where an organism lives
What is an population
A group of organisms of the same species
What is an community
All the organisms in an ecosystem
What is a niche
The role an organism plays in the ecosystem
What are biotic and abiotic factors
Eco-systems are affected by a variety of factors. These can be classified as biotic and abiotic
What are biotic factors
Biotic factors are of living organisms e.g. Production (number of predictors), grazing (food supply), competition (for food, shelter, mate) and for plants (fighting for sun)
What are abiotic factors
Abiotic factors are related to non living things in the environment. They tend to be physical factors that effect the distribution of organisms in the habitat. Abiotic factors can be measured e.g. Temperature,pH,light intensity and wind speed.
What are biomes
There are various regions on our planet. Each of these regions is called a biome. A biome is a geographical region of the planet that contains distinctive communities of flora (plants) and fauna (animals). Each biome has a distinctive climate. Ecologists consider biomes to be a group of connected ecosystems
Why do animals and plants need energy
Animals and plants need a lot of energy to carry out all the chemical reactions that keep them alive. Living things obtain energy from their food but do so in some very different ways
What is a producer
Green plants can make their own food. They are called producers
What is a consumer
Animals are unable to make their own food; instead they get the energy they need to live by eating other organisms
What are primary consumers
Primary consumers only eat plants
What are secondary consumers
Secondary consumers eat the primary consumers
Explain the difference between predators and prey
The pray are the food for the predator
What is an ecosystem
An ecosystem is made up of all the organisms living in a particular area and the non-living components they interact with.
