Chemistry Unit 2 Flashcards
What is a way to remember the first 8 alkanes
Methane - Mice Ethane - Eat Propane - Paper Butane -But Pentane - Parrots Hexane - Have Heptane - Had Octane - Oats
What is the general formula for alkanes
CnH2n + 2
What are alkenes
The second homologous series. They have the same ending -ene. They are different from the alkanes as they have double bonds
What are some of alkenes
Methane is not a part of the alkene series as it has only one carbon
Ethene Propene Butene Pentene Hexene Heptene Octene
What are cycloalkanes
The third homologous series. They have the ending ane but start with cyclo
It doesn't contain methane or ethane has it has to have 3 or more carbons Cyclopropane Cyclobutane Cyclopentane Cyclohexane Cycloheptane Cyclo octane
What is the general formula for the alkenes
CnH2n
What is the general formula for the cycloalkanes
CnH2n
Saturated or unsaturated
Unsaturated means contains double bond - alkenes
Saturated - doesn’t contain double bond - alkanes
What are the prefixes for branched alkenes/alkanes
Di - 2
Tri- 3
Tetra - 4
What are isomers
Isomers are compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formula
What is the general formula and ending for alkanols/ alcohols
CnH2n + 1OH
Ends in ol e.g METHANol
What is the ending of carboxylic acids
E.g Methanoic acid
Adds COOH
How can you tell when there is an ester link
When it is a COO
L shaped c with 2 oxygen attached by a double bond
The alcohol would then end in yl
The carboxylic acid would then end in oate
E.g ethanol + propanoic acid = ethyl propanoate
How is enthalpy calculated
Eh= cm🔼T
What is a homologous series
A homologous series is a family of compounds with similar chemical properties that can be represented by a general formula
