Combo of thought and emotion.
What does thought focus on with regards to risk perception?
Focuses on the hazard and the probability that it will occur.
What does emotion involve with regards to risk perception.
Involves fear, anger, etc.
What are the 4 reactions to risk?
Acceptance > Fear > Denial > Panic
What is risk communication?
Communication with the public. Most often describes an organization facing a crisis and the need to communicate.
What are some harmful human behaviours during a crisis?
Demanding uneeded treatment Looting/stealing Bribery/fraud Increased smoking/drinking Increased MUPS (multiple unexplained physical symptoms)
What does MUPS stand for?
Multiple Unexplained Physical Symptoms
What is Precautionary Advocacy?
High hazard, low outrage. “WATCH OUT!”
What is Outrage Management?
Low hazard, high outrage. “CALM DOWN!”
What is Crisis Communication?
High hazard, High outrage. “WE’LL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER!”
What is the “sweet spot”?
Hazard and outrage are both intermediate.

Withholding information and over-assuring audience.
