Right of way rules Flashcards
Right of way summary
Aircraft that have right of way are to maintain heading and speed, but when needed, take any safe action to best avert a collision.
Aircraft that are required to give way are to avoid passing over or under the other aircraft and avoid crossing ahead of other aircraft unless passing well clear and taking into account wake turbulence.
Head on right of way
Both aircraft must deviate right.
Converging
Aircraft that has the other on its right must give way except that power driven aircraft give way to airships, gliders, balloons, aircraft towing anything. Airships give way to gliders and balloons. Gliders give way to balloons. All aircraft give way to parachutes.
Overtaking
Aircraft being overtaken has right of way. Must overtake on right of aircraft
Landing
Aircraft in flight/on ground give way to landing.
When two or more aircraft approaching, higher aircraft gives way to lower.
Powered aircraft give way to gliders.
Emergency landing
An aircraft that is aware that another aircraft is compelled to land must give way to that aircraft.
Takeoff
Aircraft are not to takeoff until there is no apparent risk of collision with other aircraft.T
Taxiing
Ground movement aircraft/vehicles give way to landing/taking off aircraft.
Head on taxi, stop and both turn right.
Converging, pilot with other on right gives way.
Overtaking, give way and keep well clear.
Operating near other aircraft
No aircraft must fly so close to another as to create a collision hazard.
Aircraft must not fly in formation except by prior arrangement between PIC of each aircraft.
No passengers can be carried in formation for hire or reward, other than performing parachute drop.
