The following signals mean that an aircraft wishes to notify difficulty which compels it to land without requiring immediate assistance (URGENCY)
Repeated switching on and off of landing lights.
Repeated switching on and off of navigation lights.
A sucessão of white pyrotechnic (flares).
Three states of readiness
Local standby phase.
Full emergency phase.
Aircraft accident phase.
Local standby phase
Emergency services are notified that aircraft has problem, but generally remain at post.
E.g. if approaching aircraft is known to have developed some defect but the problem is not such that serious difficulty is expected in effecting safe landing.
Full emergency phase
Brings emergency facilities to a rendezvous point on the aerodrome. Medical facilities would be alerted and the police make preparations for road traffic to clear the way for emergency vehicles.
Activated when approaching is suspected to be in such trouble that there is danger of an accident.
Aircraft accident phase.
Declaration of the aircraft accident phase will bring all emergency facilities to immediate action.
Declared when aircraft accident has occurred on, or in vicinity of, aerodrome.
Emergency and survival equipment information
Holder of n air operator certificate must have available, for immediate communication to rescue coordination centres, information on the emergency and survival equipment carried on board each aircraft.
For air transport operations in excess of 50nm from shore, the information must include:
Number, colour, and type of life rafts.
Weather pyrotechnics are carried.
Details of medical and water supplies.
FQ of emergency portable radio.
