Air traffic serviecs Flashcards
Provided air traffic services
ATC for IFR flights in controlled airspace.
ATC to VFR flights in class C airspace.
ATC to aerodrome traffic at controlled aerodromes.
Area flight information service.
AFIS.
Alerting service to all flights that have filed flight plan, and as far as practicable, to all flights known to ATC.
Area control service
Primarily deals with IFR lights en route. Generally provided by radar controllers at an Area Control Centre. Can be provided by controller in aerodrome tower using non radar methods.
Approach control service
Primarily deals with IFR and controlled VFR flights arriving and departing from controlled aerodromes. provided by radar controllers at ACC or controller located in aerodrome tower using non radar methods.
Aerodrome control service
Deals with aircraft operating on and around controlled aerodromes. Service is provided by a controller in control tower of aerodrome. Most towers have radar for controller to ident aircraft locations, not control purposes.
Primary surveillance radar
Sends out signal, receives reflection back from aircraft. Aircraft does not require any special equipment.
Reflections by hills, heavy rain, ice, cloud, flock of birds - interfere with clarity of aircraft returns.
Secondary surveillance radar
Sends signal/interrogation of aircraft transponder, which sends reply signal. Hills, clouds, birds do not have transponders. Greater range. Mode A and C information. Only detects aircraft wth serviceable transponders. Range approx 250 miles. 6 located in NZ.
