What is Allergic Rhinitis?
A
Inflammatory disorder of the nose where the nose is sensitised to allergens.

IgE-Mediated.

- Sneezing.
- Bilateral Nasal Obstruction.
- Clear Nasal Discharge.
- Post-Nasal Drip.
- Nasal Pruritus.

Management of Allergic Rhinitis.
A
- Allergen Avoidance.
- 1st Line = Oral/Intranasal Antihistamines.
- 2nd Line = Intranasal Corticosteroids.
- Short Course of Topical Nasal Decongestants e.g. Oxymetazoline.

Important Considerations of Topical Nasal Decongestants (2).
A
Don’t use for prolonged periods :
- Increasing doses required to achieve same effect (tachyphylaxis).
- Rebound Hypertrophy of Nasal Mucosa - Rhinitis Medicamentosa - occurs upon withdrawal.
