Airway Obstruction and Tracheostomy Flashcards
1
Q
Aetiology of Airway Compromise (7).
A
- Angioedema.
- Anaphylaxis.
- Thermal Injury.
- Neck Haematoma.
- Wheeze.
- Surgical Emphysema.
- Reduced Consciousness.
2
Q
Simple Airway Manoeuvres (3).
A
- Head Tilt / Chin Lift (Sniffing Position).
- Jaw Thrust (Lift Mandible Forwards).
- Suction - if visible vomit, blood, secretions, foreign body) *turn to side if actively vomiting.
3
Q
Types of Airway Adjuncts (4).
A
- Oropharyngeal Airway.
- Laryngeal Mask.
- Tracheostomy.
- Endotracheal Tube
4
Q
Features of Oropharyngeal Airway (3).
A
- Often a bridge to a more definitive airway.
- Ideal for temporary procedures.
- No paralysis, easy to insert.
5
Q
Features of Laryngeal Mask (3).
A
- Device inserted into pharynx to cover airway.
- Poor control against gastric reflux and not suitable for high pressure ventilation.
- No paralysis.
6
Q
Features of Tracheostomy (2).
A
- Dries secretions so humidified air is usually required.
2. Reduces the work of breathing and dead space effect.
7
Q
Features of Endotracheal Tube (3).
A
- Requires paralysis but can use high pressure ventilation.
- Measure end tidal CO2 (error in insertion = oesophageal intubation).
- Flexible Plastic Tube with Inflatable Cuff.
