Anatomy of the Ear Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of the Ear?
- Outer Ear.
- Middle Ear.
- Inner Ear.
What are the 2 parts of the Outer Ear?
- Auricle (Pinna).
2. External Acoustic Meatus (ending at the Tympanic Membrane).
What is the Tympanic Membrane?
Connective tissue structure covered with skin on the outside and mucous membrane on the inside.
What is the Middle Ear?
Part of the ear from the Tympanic Membrane to the Lateral Wall of the Inner Ear.
Function of the Middle Ear.
Transmit vibrations from the Tympanic Membrane to the Inner Ear via auditory ossicles.
What are the 2 parts of the Middle Ear?
- Tympanic Cavity (containing Ossicles).
2. Epitympanic Recess (Superior to Tympanic Cavity next to Mastoid Air Cells).
What are the Ossicles of the Middle Ear?
- Malleus (Largest and Lateral).
- Incus (Body attached to Head of Malleus in Epitympanic Recess and 2 Limbs).
- Stapes (Smallest - Incus - Inner Ear.
What is the Auditory Tube?
Eustachian tube - cartilaginous/bony tube connecting Middle Ear to Nasopharynx to equalise pressure of Middle Ear to External Auditory Meatus.
Why are kids more prone to Middle Ear Infections?
Shorter and straighter tube in kids.
