What is Coeliac disease and which parts of the intestine does it affect?
An autoimmune disease of the small intestine triggered by ingestion of gluten
How do you test for Coeliac disease?
Tissue Transglutaminase IgA blood test
What are the symptoms of Coeliac disease?
Diarrhoea, anaemia, and IBS symptoms
What are the microscopic features of Coeliac disease?
Villous atrophy that gets better with a gluten-free diet, crypt hyperplasia, lymphocytes in lamina propria and the intraepithelium
What is Crohn’s disease?
An idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease
What are the presentations of Crohn’s disease?
Abdominal pain relieved after opening the bowels, prolonged non-bloody diarrhoea, blood if the colon is affected, weight loss, low fever
Which inflammatory bowel disease presents with fat wrapping around the intestine?
Crohn’s disease
What is ulcerative colitis?
An idiopathic chronic inflammatory bowel disease which only affects the large bowel from the rectum to the caecum
What are the presentations of ulcerative colitis?
Intermittent attacks of bloody diarrhoea, mucoid diarrhoea, abdominal pain, low fever, weight loss
Which disease can be triggered by quitting smoking?
Ulcerative colitis
