Retinal detachment Flashcards
Explain the blood supply of the retina
2/3 inner from the retinal blood vessel
1/3 outer from the choroidal blood vessel
Retinal detachment etiologies:
REST
R - Rhgmatogenous (hole)
E - Exudative
S - SOL
T - Traction
Retinal detachment etiologies - expand on Rhegmatogenous (hole) :
MAPIT:
M - Myopia (high >-4.5, 50% of these patients)
A - Aphakia
P - Pseudophakia (cataract surgery, ICCE)
I - Idiopathic
T - Trauma
Retinal detachment etiologies - expand on Exudative:
Tel Aviv Uni:
T - Trauma
A - AMD
U - Uveitis
Retinal detachment etiologies - expand on SOL:
Metastasis, choroidal melanoma, Rb
Retinal detachment etiologies - expand on Traction:
PDR (fibrosis), congenital
Retinal detachment signs and symptoms:
FLAC
F - Floaters
L - Light sensation
A - Acuity decrease
C - curtain sight ( seeing through a curtain if macula not involved, and blinding if the macula is involved)
Retinal detachment fluid is from ______
Vitreous body
Retinal detachment treatment - expand on Rhegmatogenous (hole) options:
Depends on timing!
- Early small detachments - laser/cryo
- Actual tears - Rretinpexy/cryoretinopexy.
- Scleral buckle
- Vitrectomy (in case of proliferative vitreoretinopathy)
Retinal detachment treatment - expand on Exudative:
Treat the underlying cause.
Retinal detachment known complication is
proliferative vitreoretinopathy
