Retest 9 - SAA Flashcards
Describe Cart .22cal Ball T22 from firing.
- The brass spun rim of the CC contains primer composition which when struck by the firing pin causes it to ignite.
- This flame then ignites the main filling inside the brass cc.
- The gas produced as the energetic material burns, acts upon the base of the projectile and forces it out of the cc and accelerates it down the barrel of the weapon.
What are the Cartridge materials of the CART .50cal API-T M20?
Cartridge Case – Brass
Projectile – Manganese molybdenum steel core encased in a copper/zinc alloy jacket
What is the Cartridge Length and Mass of the CART .50cal API-T M20?
L = 138.4mm (5.45in) M = 111g
What is the velocity of the CART .50cal API-T M20?
887m/s ±9m/s
What is the base of the CC stamped with for the API-T M20?
- Year of manufacture (Last two digits)
- Manufactures monogram
What is the colour of the API-T M20?
The projectile is painted Red approx. 8mm from the tip and aluminium/silver/grey from approx. 8mm to approx. 16mm from the tip.

What are is the construction and identifying features of the Cart .50cal API-T M20?
Typical SAA round that consists of a:
- Brass CC
- Percussion Primer
- Double base propellant
- Jacketed AP Proj
What are is the construction and identifying features of the Cart .50cal API-T M20 projectile?
AP Proj is manufactured from a:
- Manganese molybdenum alloy
- Has conventional boat tail design.
- Alloy core is machined at a steeper angle at the nose than the copper alloy jacket to create a void between the two components for insertion of the incendiary component.
- The alloy core also contains a recess in the base to encompass the tracer elements which is sealed by a closure disc
How does the Cart 12.7mm AP-S NM173 incendiary composition ignite?
- The proj acts on the target by transfer of kinetic energy that result from set back force which generates an air void in the RS41 Incendiary charge.
- Once the proj penetrates the armour and/or impacts the target, the RS41 Incdy Charge is adiabatically heated to initiate thus providing fire-starting effects at the target
