Histopathology of UIP?
Interstitial inflammation
Type 2 pneumocyte hyperplasia
Proliferation of smooth and vascular muscle and fibroblastic foci
What age group does it commonly affect?
Elderly
Symptoms?
Clincally slow
Dyspnoea and cough
Signs?
Basal crepitations
Cyanosis
Clubbing
How progressive is the disease?
Very - most likely dead in 5 years
What investigations can be done?
CxR
Pulmonary function tests
What do CxRs see?
In basal area:
Infiltrates
Cysts
“Ground glass” opacification on lungs
Management?
Send to an interstitial lung disease clinic
Oral anti-fibrotics
Some steroid response
Transplants
Poor prognosis overall
