Infection that has spread to the pleural cavity
Build up of pus

What is the prognosis for children when compared with adults?
A
Children have a good prognosis
Adults have a worse prognosis

Symptoms?
A
Chest pain
High swinging fever
No cough!!!

Investigations?
A
CT throax scan
Pleural ultrasound scan
Pleural aspiration

How is diagnosis made?
A
By pleural aspiration - pH less than 7.20

Treatment?
A
Chest drain
IV antibiotics
If it doesn’t go away IV antibiotic treatment can be prolonged or surgery can be considered
