Restrictive Lung Disease Flashcards
What is the most common restrictive lung disease?
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis “Usual Interstitial Pneumonia”
Pathophysiology
Thickening of the alveoli and interstitium.
With disease progression, fibrosis of distal airways; becoming resistant to expansion - Lung Volumes subsequently reduced.
What are some known causes of Restrictive Lung Disease
- Rheumatic Diseases
- Inhalation of organic and inorganic dusts
- Inhalation of noxious gases
- Radiation Exposure
- Asbestos exposure
(All will lead to damage of the pulmonary parenchyma)
What are classic symptoms of interstitial lung disease?
Dyspnea on Exertion
Persistent nonproductive cough
Rapid, shallow, low breathing
What visually occurs with chest expansion with a restrictive disease?
Limited Chest Wall Expansion
What adventitious lung sounds can be heard on auscultation?
Inspiratory Crackles
What do pulmonary function tests show?
Reduction in:
- VC
- Functional Residual Capacity
- RV
- TLC
What findings are present with expiratory flow rate testing?
Expiratory flow rates may be somewhat normal.
FEV1/FVC ratio may be normal or even increased.
Cough characteristics
Non-Productive Cough
