Restless Earth: Volcanoes Flashcards
What are the 5 steps involved for a volcano to form at a destructive margin?
- oceanic plate goes under continental
- oceanic plate is melted and destroyed by mantle
- pool of magma is formed
- the magma rises through the vents in the crust
- magma erupts to surface forming a volcano
What boundaries are volcanoes found at?
Destructive and constructive
What are cracks in the crust called?
Vents
What is magma called when it’s above the surface?
Lava
What is a hot spot?
When volcanoes form over parts of the mantle that are really hot
Where is an example of a hot spot?
Hawaii
What are the three types of volcanoes?
Composite
Shield
Dome
What are the three characteristics of composite volcanoes?
Made of ash and lava which has erupted and cooled into layers
Lava is tick and flows slowly
Has steep sides
Where is an example of a composite volcano?
Mount Fuji in Japan
Where is an example of a shield volcano?
Mauna Loa on the Hawaiian Islands
What are the three characteristics of a shield volcano?
Only made of lava
Lava is runny and flows quickly
Low and flat
Where is an example of a dome volcano?
Mount pelee in the Caribbean
What are the three characteristics of a dome volcano?
Made of only lava
Thick lava which flows slowly
Steep sides
Why is it important to try and predict eruptions?
Millions of people live where eruptions can happen, so damage can be minimal if it is predicted
How are volcanoes monitored?
Look for tiny earthquakes
Escaping gas
Shape changes
