Coastal Zone: Coastal Landforms Flashcards
Where does most of the erosion happen on the cliff?
At the foot.
When waves erode cliffs what do they form?
Wave-cut platforms.
When the foot of the cliff begins to erode what is formed?
A wave cut notch.
After the rock above the notch becomes unstable and eventually collapses, what happens?
The collapsed material is washed away and a new wave cut notch starts to form.
Repeated collapsing of the cliff results in what?
Cliff retreating.
When the platform left behind retreats, what is made?
A wave cut platform.
Headlands and bays form where what is different?
Erosion resistance
Headlands are eroded to form what three things?
Caves, arches, stacks (and stumps)
What type of rock are headlands usually made from?
Resistant rocks
Name the 5 steps to make a stack.
- Waves crash into headlands and enlarge the cracks by hydraulic power and abrasion.
- Repeated erosion and enlargement of the crack makes a cave form.
- Continued erosion depends the cave until it break through forming an arch (Durdle door)
- Erosion contributes wearing away until the arch collapses.
- This forms a stack, an isolated rock like old harry in Dorset.
