Coastal Zone: Transportation And Depostion Flashcards
How is material transported along coasts?
Long shore drift
What is transportation?
Movement of material
Explain longshore drift.
- Waves follow direction of prevailing wind
- They hit the coast at an angle (any angle that isn’t a right angle)
- The swash carries material up the beach in the same direction as the waves.
- The backwash carries materials back down the beach at right angles towards the sea.
What are the four processes of transportation?
- Traction
- Suspension
- Saltation
- Solution
What is traction?
This is where large particles like holders are pushed along the seabed by the force of the water
What is suspension?
Small particles like silk and clay are carried along in the water.
What is saltation?
This is where pebble sized particles are bounced along the seabed by the force of water.
What is solution?
Soluble materials dissolve in the water and carried along
What is deposition?
This is the dropping of material.
Why would the amount of material that’s deposited on a Coast increase?
Either:
- there lots of erosion somewhere else on the coast so there’s lots of material available
- lots of transportation of material to the area
What’s a constructive wave?
Constructive waves deposit more material than they erode away.
4 Characteristics of a constructive wave?
- Low frequency (6-8/ minute)
- Low and long
- Powerful swash and
- Weak backwash
