Q

What are the 4 main reasons for the rapid erosion?

A
  • Rock type. The cliffs here are made from Boulder clay which is easily eroded. It is likely to slump causing the cliffs to collapse.
  • Naturally narrowing beaches. Beaches slow waves down. Narrow beaches give less protection.
  • People worsening the situation. Costal defences have been build but this means the beaches are narrower and easily eroded in other places.
  • Powerful waves. Holderness faces the prevailing wind direction which brings waves from the North East. Waves increase in pier over a long distance.

Q

Give an environmental impact of costal erosion.

A

Some sssi sites are threatened. The lagoons bear Easington are part of SSSI. The lagoons are separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand and shingle. If this eroded, the lagoons would connect to the sea and they would be destroyed.
