respiratory volumes & capacities Flashcards
inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) + tidal volume (TV) =
inspiratory capacities (IC)
expiratory reserve volume (ERV) + residual volume (RV) =
functional residual capacity (FRC)
what makes up inspiratory capacity (IC)?
IRV + TV + ERV
what is tidal volume?
amount of air inhaled or exhaled with each breath under resting conditions
what is inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)?
amount of air that can be forcefully inhaled after a normal tidal volume inspiration
what is expiratory reserve volume (ERV)?
amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal tidal volume expiration
what is residual volume?
amount of air remaining in the lungs after a forced expiration
what is vital capacity (VC)?
maximum amount of air contained in lungs after a maximum inspiratory effort
what is inspiratory capacity (IC)?
maximum amount fo air that can be inspired after a normal tidal volume expiration
what is functional residual capacity (FRC)?
volume of air remaining in the lungs after a normal tidal volume expiration
obstructive pulmonary disease
increased airway resistance
(ex: bronchitis)
restrictive disease
reduced TLC due to this disease
what may increase because of hyperinflation of lungs?
TLC, FRC, RV
what declines because lung expansion is compromised?
VC, TLC, FRC, RV
