What type of infection is coryza (cold)?
Viral
What are its symptoms?
Sore throat, mild fever.
Complications- Sinusitis, acute bronchitis
Which viral agents can cause Coryza?
- Adenovirus
- Rhinovirus
- Respiratory syncytial virus.
What happens in Quinsy?
Inflamed tonsil. Commonly caused by strep.
What is acute epiglottis?
Inflammation of epiglottus. Life threatening. Common in children.
What is acute bronchitis?
Self limiting inflammation of the bronchi/bronchioles.

Clinical features- cold, cough, productive, fever
Symptoms of COPD exacerbation.
- Cough
- Breathless
- Wheezy.
What is pneumonia
Severe chest infection. Can only be diagnosed by CXR.
Appearance of pneumonia on CXR?
Consolidation
Classic symptoms of pneumonia?
- Pyrexia
- Cough (prod/non)
- Dyspnoea
Investigations for pneumonia?
- CXR
- Blood count
- Urea
- Sputum.
What is CURB65?
Confusion U rea >7mg Resp rate > 30bpm B lood pressure (Systolic <90. Diastolic < 61) 65- Age
What are the most common pathogens of pneumonia?
- Strep pneumoniae
- Staph aureus (Drug users)
- H influenzae
- Moraxella
