Respiratory System Vocabulary Flashcards
What are the 4 events of respiration?
-Pulmonary Ventilation
-External Respiration
-Respiratory Gas Transport
-Internal Respiration
What is Pulmonary Ventilation?
Air moving in and out of the lungs so that the gases contained in the alveoli are continuously refreshed (Breathing).
What is External Respiration?
Gas exchange that occurs between the pulmonary blood and the alveoli (Between blood and body EXterior).
What is Respiratory Gas Transport?
The process that oxygen and carbon dioxide have to be transported to and from the lungs and the tissue cells of the body through the blood stream.
What is Internal Respiration?
Gas exchange between the blood and the tissue cells occurs at the systemic capillaries (Between the blood and the body INterior).
What is Cellular Respiration?
The actual use of oxygen and production of carbon dioxide. It is the corner stone of all energy-producing chemical reactions in the body.
What is the Nasal Septum?
The midline of the nose that separates the nasal cavity.
What is the Mucous Membrane?
Moist protective lining of the respiratory system that helps secrete mucus (Nose, mouth, and the lungs). It helps protect these organs by removing any inhaled particles and humidifying inhaled air.
What is the Sinus?
Air filled pockets that are contained in the bones of the face and skull. They connect to nasal passageways and help filter and humidify inhaled air.
What is the Pharynx?
Muscular passageway that commonly serves as a passageway for food and air (Throat).
What is the Larynx?
This passageway helps route food and air into the correct passageways and also plays a role in our speech (Voice Box).
What is the Glottis?
Vocal folds/slit like passageways that sit above the larynx. Closes when we are actively swallowing.
What is the Epiglottis?
This protects the opening of the larynx. It restricts the larynx when we are eating and causes us to cough out any unwanted food.
What is the Trachea?
Where air enters the body through the larynx and through to about the mid chest (T.5 vertebrae).
What is the Bronchus?
Each of the bronchi runs obliquely before it plunges into the hilum of the lungs of its own side. By the time this incoming air reaches the bronchi, it is warm and cleansed of most impurities.
What are the Bronchioles?
Smaller branches that come off of the main bronchi.
What are the Alveolar Ducts?
Small passageways in the lungs that help connect the respiratory bronchioles to the alveolar sacs. They also help conduct gas exchange.
What are Alveoli?
These expand and shrink to help gas exchange between the air and the blood take place.
