Bone Anatomy Flashcards
What is the Epiphysis?
It makes up the ends of long bones, made of compact bone and spongy bone.
What is the Diaphysis?
A shaft that makes up most bones length, made of compact bone.
What is Articular Cartilage?
Something to cover the Bones surface and make it smooth, preventing friction between joints.
What is the Periosteum?
It’s hundreds of connective tissue fibers that helps secure the underlying bone.
What is Compact Bone like?
-Dense
-Looks smooth
-Looks homogeneous
What is Spongy Bone?
Bone that is composed of small, needle-like, and porous pieces of bone. Contains a lot of open space making it lightweight.
What are Processes?
Bony projections
What is Marrow? What are the two kinds of Marrow?
Soft, fatty connective tissue that fills the internal space of bone. Red and yellow.
What does Red Marrow do?
Produces blood
What does Yellow Marrow do?
Adipose tissue, it’s inactive.
What is an Osteocyte?
Mature bone cell
What are Osteoblasts?
Bone building cells
What are Osteoclasts?
Bone destroying cells that help break down bone matrix and releases calcium ions into the blood.
