Organelles Flashcards
What is the cell membrane?
The semipermeable membrane of the cell which surrounds the cytoplasm. There are receptors located on the outside of the cell to communicate with other cells.
What is the cytoplasm?
The gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell and holds the other organelles in place. It also give the cell its unique shape and structure.
What is the mitochondria?
Generates most of the cells energy/ATP and is also the site of cell respiration.
What is the nucleus?
The central and most important part of the cell. Considered the control center of the cell.
What are ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis. Located in either the endoplasmic reticulum or free floating in the cell.
What is chromatin/chromosomes/DNA?
Strand that contain the genetic material which controls our individuality.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
Structure which forms a maze of pathways for proteins and other materials to be carried from one part of a cell to another.
What is the Golgi apparatus?
A system of membranes that modifies and packages proteins to be exported out of the cell.
What are vacuoles/vesicles?
Fluid filled sac that is used as storage of the materials needed by a cell. They also help dispose of unneeded materials.
What are lysosomes?
Organelle that helps break down food, any worn out/dead cell parts, and bacteria.
What are flagella/cilia?
Organelles that provide locomotion for substances on the outside of the cell.
What are centrioles/centrosomes?
They appear during cell division to pull apart chromosomes.
What are micro-filaments/Microtubules?
They support the cytoplasm and help move substances within the cytoplasm.
What is the nucleolus?
Helps produce ribosomes and proteins inside of the nucleus.
