What is hematocrit?
The percentage of the blood volume that is occupied by red blood cells/erythrocytes.
What is plasma?
The liquid part of the blood that contains over 100 different substances.
What are erythrocytes?
Red blood cells that carry oxygen and carbon dioxide through the body. It contains hemoglobin(iron) that helps transport the oxygen.
What is erythropoietin?
A hormone that helps with erythrocyte production.
What is a macrophage?
Something that helps to fight diseases like tuberculosis.
What is anemia?
A condition where there’s a decrease is the bloods ability to carry oxygen.
What is a leukocyte?
White blood cells, are much less numerous than red blood cells because they primarily help fight off diseases.
What is a neutrophil?
A white blood cell that engulfs invading microbes and contributes to non-specific defenses against disease.
What is an eosinophil?
A white blood cell that helps fight against allergic reactions and parasitic infections.
What is a basophil?
A white blood cell that produces histamine and heparin.
What are monocytes?
A white blood cell that migrates tissues to become macrophages.
What are lymphocytes?
A white blood cell that makes antibodies to fight off infections.
What are thrombocytes?
Platelets that clot blood.
What is coagulation?
Process of blood clotting.
What is an antigen?
A protein that when produced in blood, will trigger an immune response.
What is an antibody?
A substance that is produced by the body which will destroy or inactivate an antigen that has entered the body.
What is agglutination?
Clumping of red blood cells in smaller vessels in the body.
What is hematopoiesis?
The process of forming blood clots.
