14
Q

Explain what happens in the process of inspiration ?

A

The diaphragm muscle contracts causing the normal dome shape to flatten

  • the external instercostal muscle contracts raising the rib cage
  • creates a negative pressure known as vaccume effect sucking air into lungs

15
Q

Explain what happens in expiration?

A

Diaphragm muscles relax and rise returning upwards to dome shape

  • intercostal muscles relax, decreasing the chest cavity volume.
  • creates a positive pressure, which pushes some air out of lungs

16
Q

What is the main muscle involved in breathing

A

The diaphragm

17
Q

What is alveoli

A

Many tiny air sacs in the lungs that allow for rapid gaseous exhange

18
Q

What is gaseous exchanges

A

A diffusion of gases from a higher concentration to a lower concentration

19
Q

Where does gaseous exchange take place

A

Between the alveoli and capillaries in the lungs

20
Q

What is diffusion

A

During inspiration high levels of oxygen are present in the alveoli
This diffuses into the capillaries that surround the alveoli
Where there is a low concentration of oxygen.
Oxygen is then transported to the heart via the pulmonary vein.

21
Q

What is costal breathing

A

Is a shallow breathing pattern through the chest and involves contraction of the external intercostal muscles

22
Q

What is diaphragmatic breathing

A

A deeper method of breathing
The abdomen is encouraged to rise and fall, contraction and lowering of the diaphragm
Promoted in yoga

23
Q

What is lateral thoracic breathing

A

The sides and back of the rib ages to expand during inhalation to maximise the expansion of the rib cage and use of the lower lungs

24
Q

What promotes flexibility in the thoratic spine

A

Lateral and thoracic breathing

25
Q

Which exercise discipline uses the lateral thoracic breathing

A

Yoga
